My Beginner’s Workout Journey

Series Description

This series documents my journey from knowing almost nothing about working out to finally building a routine I can stick with. Along the way, I share what worked, what didn’t, and what I learned—so beginners like me can start with fewer doubts and more confidence.

Intro: Why I Decided to Start Working Out (From Zero)

Introduction

My name is Jason, and this is the beginning of my journey toward building a healthier lifestyle—something I struggled with for a long time. Motivation was always my biggest obstacle. Whenever I tried to start working out, I’d stay consistent for about a week… then fall right back into old habits. It felt like a New Year’s resolution—except it happened randomly throughout the year.

I avoided paying for a gym membership because I knew I wouldn’t stick with it, and I didn’t want to waste the money. Instead, I’d try to piece together workouts at home, only to lose momentum again. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

In this multi-part series, I’m sharing my real experience—what motivated me, what held me back, what scared me, and what finally helped me commit to change.

Where I Was Starting From

  • Little to no consistent workout experience
  • Low energy and an on-again, off-again routine
  • A constant fear of doing exercises “wrong”

My Goal

What finally pushed me to take action was an upcoming vacation to Epic Universe. I wanted to be able to enjoy every ride without worrying about my fitness holding me back. That goal mattered enough to try something different.

My wife and I decided to hire a personal trainer at our local gym—not for perfection, but for accountability. Having someone there to guide me and keep me motivated made starting feel less overwhelming.

What I Learned

Starting small removed the pressure I’d always put on myself. I learned that consistency matters far more than intensity. Simply showing up—especially on days when motivation was low—was the real win.
